It was a bright and sunny morning when the aroma of fresh herbs filled the air around Thuy’s little countryside kitchen. Birds chirped from the trees, and the gentle breeze carried the promise of a wonderful day. In the middle of the kitchen, with her sleeves rolled up and a towel tucked into her apron, stood Lala – cheerful, determined, and ready to help. Today, she was not just a guest. She was Chef Lala!
Thuy had been planning to cook a simple lunch for their small family. She enjoyed cooking but often felt overwhelmed by the preparation. That morning, as she was sorting vegetables in a basket, Lala popped her head in the door with a wide grin.
“Thuy! Can I help you today? I want to learn how to cook something yummy!”
Thuy laughed. “Of course, Lala! I was just thinking of making a few simple dishes. With your help, it’ll be even more fun!”
So, the two got started. Thuy laid out the ingredients on the kitchen table: fresh eggs, tomatoes, garlic, basil, tofu, and rice. Simple ingredients – but with the right touch, they could be transformed into something delightful.

Dish 1: Tomato and Egg Stir-fry
The first dish Thuy wanted to teach Lala was the classic tomato and egg stir-fry. It was quick, nutritious, and a favorite among many.
“Lala, do you know how to crack an egg?” Thuy asked, holding up a brown egg.
“I think so!” Lala said excitedly, taking the egg. She tapped it gently on the edge of the bowl and – crack! – it opened neatly.
“Perfect!” Thuy smiled. “Now beat it gently.”
Lala whisked the eggs while Thuy heated a little oil in the pan. Once it was hot, she poured in the eggs and let them fluff up slightly before removing them. Then she added chopped tomatoes and a little sugar and salt. When the tomatoes softened into a sauce, she added the eggs back in, stirring until the flavors combined.
They tasted the result. “Mmm!” Lala exclaimed. “So simple but so tasty!”
Dish 2: Crispy Tofu with Garlic
Next up was one of Thuy’s favorites: crispy tofu with garlic.
“First,” Thuy explained, “we press the tofu to remove the water. Then we cut it into cubes.”
Lala watched carefully, learning every step. Thuy then heated oil and placed the tofu pieces gently in the pan. They sizzled and turned golden brown.
Lala’s eyes widened. “They look like little pillows!”
Once crispy, Thuy added finely chopped garlic and a dash of soy sauce. The smell was incredible – savory, rich, and comforting.
“This dish goes so well with rice,” Thuy said, plating the tofu. “It’s crispy on the outside and soft inside.”
Lala nodded, already excited to try cooking it herself next time.

Dish 3: Stir-fried Morning Glory
Thuy brought out a bunch of fresh morning glory – a leafy green vegetable that grows in the region.
“Lala, this one is super easy and very healthy,” Thuy said. “All you need is garlic and soy sauce.”
They chopped the morning glory into manageable pieces. Thuy heated some oil in the wok, added the garlic, and tossed in the greens. Within a few minutes, the leaves wilted and turned vibrant green.
“This is best served hot,” Thuy said. “It keeps the crunch and flavor.”
Lala helped plate the dish, proud to be part of the cooking process.
Making Rice the Traditional Way
While the dishes were being prepared, Thuy also showed Lala how to cook rice using the traditional pot method – not a rice cooker.
“It’s important to wash the rice well,” Thuy explained. “We want to remove the excess starch.”
They washed the rice until the water ran clear, added the right amount of water, and placed it on the stove. Lala learned to listen for the bubbling sound and watch for the steam. When the water was nearly gone, they reduced the heat and let it finish cooking slowly.
“The rice smells so good,” Lala whispered. “I didn’t know rice could have so much aroma.”

Final Touch: Fresh Herb Salad
For a refreshing side, Thuy prepared a quick herb salad with mint, basil, cucumber, and lime juice. The bright flavors complemented the warm dishes perfectly.
They sat down together, surrounded by their colorful plates: yellow-gold egg stir-fry, crispy golden tofu, vibrant green morning glory, fluffy white rice, and a fragrant herb salad.
“This looks like a feast!” Lala clapped her hands.
“It is a feast – a simple one,” Thuy said warmly. “Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few fresh ingredients and love, you can make something amazing.”

As they ate, Lala shared her thoughts. “I used to think only chefs could cook meals like this, but today I learned that anyone can cook if they pay attention and have someone to teach them.”
Thuy nodded. “And I’m proud of you, Chef Lala.”
From that day on, Lala became more curious in the kitchen. She started experimenting with recipes, sometimes even surprising Thuy with her own creations. Together, they built a bond over cooking, learning from each other and making mealtimes full of laughter and warmth.
Simple dishes like tomato-egg stir-fry, crispy tofu, and morning glory stir-fry may not be flashy, but they carry flavors of tradition, love, and connection. And now, thanks to Chef Lala’s enthusiasm and Thuy’s guidance, these meals became a symbol of friendship, learning, and joy.
The day ended with full bellies, happy hearts, and a kitchen filled with the scent of garlic, basil, and sweet memories.
Moral of the story:
Cooking doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. With a few fresh ingredients, a little guidance, and a good attitude, anyone – even a beginner like Lala – can prepare meals that are not only simple but also absolutely delicious.
