It was a sunny afternoon in the village, and little Lala was feeling extra energetic. With her favorite apron on and her hair tied up in tiny pigtails, she skipped into the kitchen, eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Mom! Can we make a cake today?” she asked, bouncing on her toes.
Mom, who was quietly peeling apples by the window, looked over and smiled warmly. “A cake, huh? Well, why not? But we’ll keep it simple. No fancy ingredients, just what we have at home.”
Lala clapped her hands. “Yay! I love simple cakes! And I want to help with everything!”
Together, they went to the pantry and collected what they needed. Flour, sugar, eggs, milk, oil, and a little vanilla. That was it. No butter, no heavy cream, no special equipment. Just a mixing bowl, a whisk, and a baking pan.
Lala read the ingredients out loud as Mom measured them.
“Two cups of flour!”
“One cup of sugar!”
“Two eggs!”
“One cup of milk!”
“Half a cup of oil!”
“One teaspoon of vanilla!”
Mom gently placed the ingredients on the table. “Alright, my little chef, let’s begin.”
Lala started by cracking the eggs. One egg landed perfectly in the bowl. The other… not so much. It slipped from her hand and splashed onto the table.
“Oh no!” she gasped.
Mom laughed. “It’s okay, sweetheart. That’s part of learning. Let’s clean it up and keep going.”
With the egg incident behind them, Lala poured the sugar into the eggs and began whisking. The mixture turned thick and pale.
“I like this part,” she said, stirring faster. “It’s like magic!”
Next, they added the milk, oil, and vanilla. Lala watched as the pale yellow mixture swirled into a creamy liquid. Then, it was time to sift the flour.
Mom held the sifter while Lala turned the handle.

“It’s snowing flour!” she giggled.
Bit by bit, they mixed everything together until they had a smooth, thick batter.
“Can I taste it?” Lala asked.
Mom raised an eyebrow. “Just a little.”
Lala dipped her finger into the batter and tasted it. “Mmm! It’s already yummy!”
They greased the cake pan and poured the batter in. Mom carefully placed it in the oven and set the timer.
Now came the hardest part: waiting.
Lala sat by the oven, peering through the glass as the batter slowly rose into a golden dome.
“Mom, it’s growing!”
Mom smiled and patted her head. “That’s the baking magic, my dear.”
To pass the time, Lala drew pictures of cakes with different toppings—one with strawberries, one with chocolate syrup, and even one shaped like a duck.
After about thirty minutes, the kitchen was filled with a warm, sweet smell. The kind of smell that made your tummy rumble and your heart feel happy.
Ding!
The timer rang. Mom put on her oven mitts and carefully pulled the cake out. It was golden-brown, fluffy, and perfect.
“Whoa…” Lala whispered, eyes wide. “It looks like a cloud!”
They let the cake cool for a bit, and then came the fun part: decorating.
“I want to make it pretty!” Lala said.

Mom gave her a bowl of powdered sugar mixed with a little milk and vanilla—homemade icing! They spread it across the top of the cake like a blanket of snow.
Lala added a few sliced bananas and strawberries. “Now it’s a fruit party!”
Mom nodded in approval. “Looks delicious.”
Finally, they sliced the cake and took their first bites.
“MMMM!” Lala’s eyes sparkled. “It’s so soft and sweet!”
Mom took a bite and smiled. “This is one of the best cakes I’ve ever had.”
“Even though it’s simple?” Lala asked.
“Especially because it’s simple. We didn’t need anything fancy. Just love, teamwork, and a little sweetness.”
Lala gave her mom a big hug. “I want to make this cake again and again!”
That evening, they shared the cake with their neighbors. Everyone was amazed.
“This is so good!” said Uncle Thom.
“What’s the secret ingredient?” asked Auntie May.
Mom winked and said, “Just a little girl with a big heart.”
And from that day on, whenever someone in the village craved something sweet, they would ask Lala and her mom for the recipe to the magical, simple cake.
