It was a bright and sunny morning when Bibi woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. Today was a very special day. Uncle Phong had promised to take her to the market to buy vegetables and fruits! Bibi had been looking forward to this day all week. She loved spending time with Uncle Phong, who always made everything fun and interesting.
After quickly brushing her teeth and getting dressed, Bibi rushed downstairs where Uncle Phong was waiting with a big smile.
“Ready to go, little explorer?” he asked, holding out a woven basket.
“Ready!” Bibi said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
They set off together, walking down the narrow streets of their village. The morning air was cool and fresh, and Bibi skipped along happily, swinging the empty basket back and forth.

When they arrived at the market, Bibi’s eyes grew wide with wonder. There were so many colors, sounds, and smells! Stalls lined the streets, each overflowing with fruits, vegetables, flowers, and all kinds of wonderful things. Vendors called out cheerfully, offering their best produce to passersby.
“First, we need to buy some vegetables for Grandma’s soup,” Uncle Phong said, steering Bibi toward a stall piled high with greens.
They stopped in front of a table stacked with fresh spinach, bok choy, and water spinach. Bibi reached out and touched the cool, crisp leaves.

“Can I choose some?” she asked eagerly.
“Of course,” Uncle Phong chuckled. “Pick the ones that look the freshest.”
Bibi carefully examined the bunches, just like Uncle Phong had taught her. She picked a bundle of bright green spinach, its leaves unbruised and healthy.
“Excellent choice!” said the vendor, handing it to Uncle Phong with a smile.
Next, they moved to another stall where plump carrots and shiny eggplants sat in neat piles. Bibi marveled at the vibrant orange of the carrots and the deep purple of the eggplants.
“We’ll need carrots for the stew,” Uncle Phong said, handing Bibi a small cloth bag. “Pick six good ones.”
Bibi chose the firmest carrots she could find, making sure they weren’t too big or too small. Uncle Phong gave her an approving nod.
As they continued, Uncle Phong showed Bibi how to tell if cucumbers were fresh by gently squeezing them and checking for firmness. They picked out a few crisp cucumbers and added them to their basket.
“Now, it’s fruit time!” Uncle Phong announced, and Bibi clapped her hands in excitement.
They walked over to the fruit section, where the air smelled sweet and tangy. Tables were overflowing with mangoes, bananas, pineapples, and lychees. Bibi’s mouth watered just looking at them.

At the mango stall, Bibi inhaled deeply. The ripe mangoes smelled heavenly.
“Want to pick a few?” Uncle Phong asked.
“Yes, please!” Bibi exclaimed. She gently squeezed the mangoes, remembering what Uncle Phong had said: a ripe mango should be slightly soft and smell sweet near the stem. She selected three perfect mangoes and proudly placed them in the basket.
Next, they visited the banana seller, who had several bunches hanging from a wooden beam. Bibi chose a small bunch of golden bananas, just the right ripeness for eating soon.
They also stopped by a lychee vendor. Uncle Phong bought a small bag of the juicy red fruits, and he peeled one open for Bibi to taste.
“Mmm, so sweet!” Bibi said, her eyes lighting up.
After gathering all the fruits and vegetables they needed, they decided to take a little break. Uncle Phong bought two cups of fresh coconut juice from a nearby stand, and they sat on a bench sipping their drinks and watching the lively market around them

“Uncle Phong, the market is like a treasure hunt!” Bibi said happily.
“It is, Bibi,” Uncle Phong agreed. “Every visit is a new adventure.”
On their way out, they passed a stall selling herbs and spices. Uncle Phong bought some fresh basil, lemongrass, and a small bag of fragrant star anise.
“These will make Grandma’s soup even more delicious,” he said.
Bibi nodded, imagining the warm, comforting soup waiting for them at home.
As they walked back, the basket was now heavy with all their goodies. Bibi insisted on carrying it for a little while, even though it made her arms tired. She wanted to feel helpful and grown-up.
“You did such a good job picking everything today,” Uncle Phong said, giving her a pat on the back. “Grandma is going to be very proud.”
When they got home, Grandma greeted them at the door with a warm smile.
“My little helpers!” she said, taking the basket from Bibi. She looked through the vegetables and fruits, nodding approvingly. “These are wonderful choices. Thank you both.”

Bibi beamed with pride. She followed Grandma into the kitchen, where they began preparing the soup together. Uncle Phong chopped the carrots while Bibi washed the spinach and cucumbers. The kitchen soon filled with the delicious smell of simmering broth, fresh herbs, and cooked vegetables.
Later that evening, they all sat around the table, enjoying the hearty vegetable soup, crispy cucumbers, and slices of juicy mango for dessert.
“This is the best soup ever!” Bibi declared between spoonfuls.
Grandma laughed. “That’s because it was made with love—and excellent shopping!”
Everyone smiled and agreed. It had been a wonderful day, full of laughter, learning, and delicious food. Bibi couldn’t wait for her next adventure with Uncle Phong at the market.
And as she drifted off to sleep that night, she dreamed of colorful stalls, sweet fruits, and the wonderful feeling of finding treasures with someone she loved.
