The morning sun peeked through the curtains, filling the house with a golden glow. CUTIS, with his fluffy hair sticking up from sleep, rubbed his eyes and glanced over to the bed where his best little friend, the baby monkey, was curled up. The monkey stretched, yawned, and then immediately started climbing onto CUTIS’s shoulders as if to say, “Wake up, it’s time for fun!”
But something felt different that morning. CUTIS noticed that Dad had been whispering with Mom in the kitchen since very early, and every time CUTIS or the monkey tried to peek, Dad would quickly close the door with a smile and say, “Not yet, it’s a surprise.”
That single word — surprise — was enough to ignite endless curiosity in both CUTIS and the baby monkey.
The Curiosity Begins
CUTIS sat cross-legged on the living room floor, while the monkey twirled in circles around him, scratching its head in confusion.
“What do you think Dad is hiding?” CUTIS whispered.
The monkey tilted its head, made a tiny “ooh ooh aah aah,” and then scampered to the kitchen door, pressing its ear against the wood.
From inside, faint sounds could be heard — clinking dishes, rustling bags, and Dad humming cheerfully. The monkey looked back at CUTIS with wide eyes as if to say, “This is serious!”
CUTIS giggled. “We have to find out. Let’s be detectives!”
The monkey clapped its little hands, agreeing wholeheartedly.
Detective Mission
Their first attempt was simple: sneaking closer. CUTIS tiptoed down the hallway while the monkey balanced on his shoulder like a pirate’s parrot. Every step creaked louder than the last, and CUTIS froze whenever Dad’s humming paused.
Finally, they reached the kitchen door. CUTIS leaned in, but before he could listen, the monkey accidentally sneezed — a tiny, squeaky sneeze that sounded much louder in the silence.
The door flew open. Dad stood there with flour on his shirt and a playful grin on his face. “What are you two up to, hmm?”
CUTIS’s cheeks turned pink. “Uh… nothing! Just… walking.”
The monkey covered its face with both hands as if hiding from being caught.
Dad chuckled, patted CUTIS on the head, and closed the door again. “Patience, you’ll find out soon enough.”
CUTIS and the monkey groaned together. The mystery only grew deeper.

The Funny Mistakes
Later, CUTIS tried to climb a chair to peek through the kitchen window. The monkey eagerly joined him, but the chair wobbled and tipped. Both of them tumbled onto the floor with a loud thud.
Mom rushed over. “Are you two okay?”
CUTIS gave a sheepish nod, while the monkey rubbed its head dramatically like an actor in a play.
“Stay out of the kitchen for now,” Mom said kindly. “It’ll be worth the wait.”
CUTIS whispered to the monkey, “We’re terrible spies.”
The monkey chattered back, tugging on his shirt, clearly insisting they try again.
The Clues Appear
Hours passed, and the suspense was unbearable. Every time Dad passed through the hallway, CUTIS tried to spot clues.
First clue: Dad carried a basket covered with a towel.
Second clue: There was a sweet smell drifting from the kitchen — something baked, maybe cake?
Third clue: CUTIS spotted balloons peeking from under the table when Dad wasn’t looking.
The monkey jumped up and down excitedly, pointing at the balloons. CUTIS’s eyes widened. “A party? But for who?”
The more they guessed, the sillier their ideas became.
“Maybe it’s a giant banana surprise for you!” CUTIS laughed, poking the monkey’s tummy.
The monkey squeaked happily, clapping at the thought.
“Or maybe it’s… a robot dog for me!” CUTIS added, his imagination running wild.
Both rolled around on the floor giggling, their excitement bubbling higher and higher.

The Big Build-Up
By afternoon, Dad finally gathered CUTIS and the monkey in the living room. “Alright, detectives. You’ve been very patient — mostly,” he teased with a wink.
The monkey leapt onto Dad’s lap, grabbing his shirt eagerly, while CUTIS bounced on the couch.
“What is it, Dad? Tell us!”
Dad stood up, carrying the mysterious basket from the kitchen. The towel was still draped over it. He placed it on the coffee table dramatically, like a magician about to reveal a trick.
“Are you ready?” Dad asked.
“YES!” CUTIS shouted.
The monkey jumped up and down, tail swishing with anticipation.
The Surprise Revealed
With a flourish, Dad pulled the towel away. Inside the basket was a collection of the most colorful cupcakes CUTIS had ever seen. Each one was decorated with funny little faces — smiley suns, goofy animals, and even a cupcake shaped like a tiny monkey holding a banana.
The monkey gasped, covering its mouth in shock, then immediately pointed at the monkey-shaped cupcake, squealing with joy. CUTIS laughed so hard he nearly fell off the couch.
But that wasn’t all. Behind the cupcakes, Dad revealed a small box. When he opened it, inside was a toy set: a miniature kitchen with pots, pans, and tiny wooden fruits.
CUTIS’s eyes sparkled. “So we can cook like you, Dad!”
The monkey grabbed a little wooden banana from the set and hugged it tightly, as if it were the greatest treasure in the world.

The Celebration
Mom brought out lemonade, and the family gathered around to enjoy the cupcakes. CUTIS carefully picked the one shaped like a sun, while the monkey, of course, chose the monkey-banana cupcake.
As they ate, CUTIS and the monkey decided to try out their new toy kitchen. They placed the wooden fruits into the tiny pans and stirred with serious expressions, pretending to be master chefs.
“Chef CUTIS reporting for duty!” he announced.
The monkey clapped its hands and mimicked stirring, making everyone laugh.
Dad pretended to taste their “dish.” “Mmm, the best wooden fruit soup I’ve ever had!”
The monkey rolled on the floor laughing, while CUTIS puffed out his chest proudly.
The Sweet Ending
As the day wound down, CUTIS lay on the couch with the monkey snuggled against his side. Both were sticky from cupcake frosting but too happy to care.
“Dad’s surprise was better than anything we guessed,” CUTIS whispered, stroking the monkey’s soft fur.
The monkey nodded sleepily, still clutching the little wooden banana.
Dad tucked a blanket over them and smiled. “The best surprises are the ones we share together.”
And with that, CUTIS and the baby monkey drifted off into dreams — perhaps dreaming of more cupcakes, more toys, and more funny adventures waiting just around the corner.
