Starting a family is a dream for many, but for some, the journey to parenthood isn’t as straightforward as expected. Our path to pregnancy led us to IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)—a process that tested our patience, emotions, and resilience but ultimately brought us the greatest joy.
This is Part I of our IVF Journey, where we’ll share how we got here, the decisions we made, and what the process entailed. If you’re considering IVF or just want to understand the experience better, we hope our story provides insight, encouragement, and hope.

Why We Chose IVF
For years, we tried to conceive naturally, but after months turned into years with no success, we knew it was time to seek help. Like many couples, we faced the unknowns of infertility, which led to a series of tests, doctor visits, and ultimately, the decision to undergo IVF.
The Challenges We Faced
- Unexplained Infertility: Despite normal test results, pregnancy just wasn’t happening.
- Emotional Toll: Every negative test felt like another heartbreak.
- Time & Financial Considerations: IVF is not only expensive but also requires commitment and mental strength.
After thorough discussions with fertility specialists, we decided IVF was the best option for us to make our dream of parenthood a reality.

The IVF Process: Step by Step
IVF is an intensive medical procedure that involves several steps, each bringing us one step closer to pregnancy.
Step 1: Fertility Testing & Diagnosis
Before starting IVF, we underwent extensive fertility testing, which included:
- Bloodwork to check hormone levels.
- Ultrasounds to examine the ovaries and uterus.
- A sperm analysis to evaluate quality and count.
These tests helped our doctors tailor a plan specific to our needs.
Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation
The next step was stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of just one, as in a natural cycle. This involved daily hormone injections for about 10–14 days.
What This Looked Like:
- Multiple injections per day (administered at home).
- Frequent monitoring via blood tests and ultrasounds.
- Physical side effects like bloating, fatigue, and mood swings.
This was one of the most intense parts of the process, but knowing it was leading to our future baby kept us motivated.
Step 3: Egg Retrieval
Once our doctor determined that my eggs were ready, we scheduled the egg retrieval procedure. This was done under mild sedation and took about 30 minutes.
- Eggs were retrieved using a thin needle inserted into the ovaries.
- The procedure was minimally invasive with mild discomfort afterward.
- We were thrilled when the doctors retrieved a good number of mature eggs!
Step 4: Fertilization & Embryo Development
After retrieval, the eggs were fertilized with sperm in a lab setting. This can be done via traditional IVF (where eggs and sperm are combined) or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.
- Daily embryo monitoring was done to track development.
- Only the strongest embryos were selected for transfer.
- We anxiously awaited news on how many embryos made it to the next stage.
Step 5: Embryo Transfer
Once our embryos developed to the blastocyst stage (about 5–6 days post-fertilization), it was time for the embryo transfer.
- This was a quick, painless procedure.
- The embryo was placed into the uterus using a small catheter.
- We were given specific post-transfer instructions to increase chances of implantation.
After the transfer, we entered the dreaded two-week wait, which was emotionally challenging as we hoped for positive results.

The Emotional Side of IVF
IVF isn’t just a physical process—it’s an emotional rollercoaster. There were moments of hope, anxiety, disappointment, and excitement, all wrapped into one journey.
Coping with the Highs & Lows
- Leaning on support from family and friends.
- Practicing mindfulness and stress-relief techniques.
- Keeping the focus on the bigger picture: our future baby.

Finding Out We Were Pregnant
Finally, after waiting what felt like an eternity, it was time for the pregnancy test. We went in for our blood test (beta hCG test) and anxiously awaited the results.
Then, the call came…
“Congratulations, you’re pregnant!”
We were in disbelief, overwhelmed with gratitude and joy. After everything we had been through, we had finally reached the moment we had dreamed about.

Final Thoughts
Our IVF journey was not easy, but it was worth every step. Part I of our story covers how we got here, but our journey doesn’t end here. Stay tuned for Part II, where we’ll share the pregnancy experience, the ups and downs, and what’s next for our growing family.
