Not What I Expected But I LOVE IT!

When we picture our perfect moment, we often build it from expectations—images we’ve collected from movies, stories, dreams, or social media. We imagine how something should look, feel, and unfold. But sometimes, the most magical experiences arrive in a form completely different from what we envisioned. That’s the story I want to share today—about how something unexpected turned into something I absolutely love.

It all started with a plan. A very detailed plan, in fact. I had been saving up for months to finally redesign my living room. I wanted minimalism with warm earth tones, a giant cozy sofa, and a low wooden coffee table. I sketched out ideas, watched interior design videos, made Pinterest boards, and even asked my friends to vote on paint swatches. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted.

Then came the day to go shopping. I entered the furniture store full of excitement, ready to bring my vision to life. But nothing looked right. The neutral colors seemed dull in person, the minimalist sofas felt stiff, and the tables were too short or too generic. Frustration built up quickly. Maybe my dream design wasn’t meant to happen.

And then, something caught my eye.

Across the room was a wild, colorful sofa. A mix of deep indigo, emerald green, and burnt orange, with curved arms and plush velvet cushions. It looked like something out of a bohemian art gallery. Not what I came for at all. I almost walked past it, but something about its boldness pulled me in. I sat down—and instantly melted into it. It was so comfortable, like being hugged by a cloud of cozy rebellion.

It was the opposite of my planned aesthetic. But I loved it.

Still, I hesitated. Was I really about to scrap months of planning for something so out of character? Something so…unexpected?

Yes. Yes, I was.

I bought the sofa that day. And once it was in my living room, everything changed. The space transformed from a calm, quiet vibe to a vibrant, creative sanctuary. It inspired me to bring in patterned rugs, handwoven baskets, art with splashes of color, and even a funky standing lamp made from reclaimed wood and glass. None of this was on my original plan—but it all worked together beautifully. I had created a space that didn’t match my vision—but it matched me.

And that’s when it hit me: maybe we don’t always know what we really want until we see it.

This realization didn’t just stay in the realm of furniture. It spilled into other parts of my life too.

Like when I agreed to go on a blind date set up by a friend. I expected awkward conversation, forced smiles, and checking the time every ten minutes. But the person who walked through the door didn’t fit my “type” at all. He was taller than I’d imagined, wore vintage band t-shirts, and laughed at his own jokes before even telling them. But he was genuine. Kind. Deeply passionate about things I never thought I’d care about—like birdwatching and historical novels. I found myself leaning in, listening, laughing—enjoying. By the end of the night, I didn’t want it to end. We’ve been seeing each other ever since.

Not what I expected. But I love it.

Even the career path I’m on now was never the one I set out to follow. I studied business in college with dreams of corporate success and office skyscrapers. I envisioned myself in a pencil skirt, balancing spreadsheets and sipping coffee while running meetings. But halfway through my degree, I took an elective course in storytelling and digital media. It was meant to be easy credits. Instead, it flipped my world.

I stayed up late editing videos, writing scripts, and researching story arcs. I found joy in the creative process that I never felt in economics lectures. After graduation, I applied not to a corporate firm—but to a small production company that told local human-interest stories. It was a risk. It didn’t pay much at first. But I felt alive. And now, I get to tell stories that move people, open minds, and sometimes even spark real change.

Again, not what I expected. But wow… do I love it.

There’s something beautiful about life throwing us curveballs that lead us somewhere better. When we’re brave enough to let go of rigid expectations, we open ourselves to discovery. We make room for surprise, delight, growth—and yes, even love.

Of course, not every unexpected twist is easy or positive at first glance. Some come with challenges, pain, or disappointment. But even in those moments, there’s often a hidden opportunity waiting to be uncovered.

Take, for example, the time I missed a flight due to a traffic jam. I was furious, blaming myself, the weather, the driver—anyone and anything. But with a six-hour wait until the next flight, I sat down in a small airport café next to an older woman reading a poetry book. We struck up a conversation. She turned out to be a retired professor who had traveled the world. We talked for hours—about grief, joy, the power of words, and how life has a funny way of putting people in the right place at the right time. That conversation stayed with me. It comforted me in a time I didn’t know I needed comfort.

Was missing my flight frustrating? Absolutely. But what I got instead—connection, wisdom, a moment of magic—was something I wouldn’t trade.

The more I reflect, the more stories like this come to mind. Unexpected detours that led to better roads. Surprises that changed me. Spontaneous yeses that turned into unforgettable memories. From switching my favorite music genre, to adopting a rescue dog with only one eye, to taking a solo trip to a country I knew nothing about—my life is filled with “not what I expected” moments.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So here’s what I’ve learned: It’s okay to have a vision. It’s wonderful to plan. But when the universe hands you something different—pause before rejecting it. Sit with it. Try it on. It just might be better than what you thought you wanted. It might teach you something. Or show you a part of yourself you didn’t know was there.

Sometimes the most beautiful chapters in our lives begin with a twist. A change of direction. A bold, velvet sofa when you were shopping for beige.

Not what I expected.

But I love it.
