Heroic Rescue by Fellow Elephants

In the chaos at the Ithumba Stockades, these three elephants stood against the lion, charging and trumpeting to defend Enkikwe.

Their relentless efforts drove the lion away, allowing them to escort Enkikwe back to safety.

Enkikwe’s Remarkable Recovery Journey

Despite enduring significant pain and discomfort, Enkikwe showed incredible patience and resilience, making commendable progress in his recovery.

For several months, he was confined to the enclosure, receiving daily wound care, antibiotics, and healing green clay treatments.

Over time, he gradually rejoined the other orphan elephants, participating in their daily activities.

Steady Progress and Adaptation

Enkikwe has been cautious, avoiding vigorous activities like mud baths to prevent further injury. He enjoys his friends’ company at his own pace, his wounds have fully healed, and he remains infection-free.

Although his leg still shows some stiffness and limited mobility, there’s a noticeable improvement as he puts more weight on it.

Support from a Caring Community

Enkikwe’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. His closest companions, including Siangiki, Laragai, Olsekki, Garzi, Lemoyian, Barsilinga, Kithaka, Sirimon, and Boromoko, have provided unwavering support throughout his recovery.

Looking Ahead with Hope

Dr. Poghon estimated an 18-month healing period for Enkikwe’s knee injury, expecting a permanent limp due to damaged ligaments and tendons. However, witnessing Enkikwe’s progress towardsan everydayl life in the wild is incredibly uplifting.
