The local market was always full of life. From early morning until late afternoon, the narrow aisles were crowded with people buying fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, and handmade goods. Vendors called out to customers, children ran between the stalls, and the scent of grilled food drifted through the warm air.
It was a busy place where everyone seemed to belong.
Everyone except one small dog.
Near the entrance of the market, beside a stack of wooden crates, a thin brown dog sat quietly. His fur was dusty, his ears drooped sadly, and his eyes followed every person who walked by.
He had been there since the early morning.
Some vendors had noticed him when they were setting up their stalls. At first, they assumed he belonged to someone shopping nearby. But as the hours passed, it became clear that no one was coming back for him.
The truth was simple and heartbreaking.
Someone had abandoned him there.
A fruit seller named Lina remembered seeing a man arrive with the dog that morning. The dog had been happily wagging his tail, excited by the noise and smells of the market. But after tying the dog loosely to a pole for a moment, the man quietly slipped away into the crowd.
He never returned.
When the dog realized his owner was gone, he became restless. He waited patiently at first, watching every person who walked through the entrance. His tail wagged each time someone approached, hoping it was the familiar face he trusted.
But the hours went by, and the crowd kept changing.
Still, no one came for him.

Eventually the dog lay down beside the crates. His hopeful wag slowed, and his eyes grew heavy with confusion. Every now and then he would stand up again and look around, as if expecting to see the person who left him.
But the market was filled only with strangers.
Some people noticed him and gave him scraps of food. A butcher tossed him a small piece of meat, and a vegetable seller placed a bowl of water near the crates. The dog gratefully accepted the kindness, but he never wandered far from the entrance.
He was still waiting.
Days passed.
The dog became a quiet part of the market’s daily routine. Vendors began calling him “Buddy.” Every morning he returned to the same spot, sitting near the entrance and watching the crowds.
Despite being abandoned, he remained gentle and friendly.
Whenever someone approached him, his tail wagged softly. If a child walked by, he carefully leaned closer for a gentle pat. He never barked or caused trouble. He simply hoped that someone would notice him.
One afternoon, someone finally did.
A woman named Sarah had come to the market with her husband, Daniel, to buy ingredients for dinner. As they walked past the stalls, Sarah noticed the small dog sitting beside the crates.
He looked up at her with curious eyes.
His tail wagged slowly.
Sarah immediately stopped walking.
“Daniel,” she said softly, “look at him.”
Daniel turned and saw the dog watching them. The dog didn’t rush forward or beg for food. Instead, he simply stood up and approached slowly, as if politely introducing himself.
His tail wagged a little faster.
Sarah knelt down and gently held out her hand. The dog sniffed her fingers carefully before licking them softly.
“Oh my goodness,” Sarah whispered. “He’s so sweet.”
A nearby vendor noticed them and walked over.
“You like him?” the vendor asked.
“Yes,” Sarah said. “Does he belong to someone?”
The vendor shook his head.
“No. Someone left him here about a week ago. He’s been waiting ever since.”
Sarah looked at the dog again.
His gentle eyes seemed to say everything.
“He’s been waiting… this whole time?” she asked quietly.

The vendor nodded.
“He never leaves the entrance. I think he still believes his owner will come back.”
Sarah felt her heart ache.
Daniel crouched beside the dog and gently scratched behind his ears. The dog immediately leaned into the touch, closing his eyes with contentment.
“He’s a good boy,” Daniel said.
The dog wagged his tail so hard that his whole body wiggled.
Sarah smiled.
“I think he chose us,” she said.
The vendor laughed softly.
“Maybe he did.”
The couple exchanged a look.
Sometimes, the biggest decisions happen in the simplest moments.
“Let’s take him home,” Daniel said.
Sarah’s face lit up instantly.
“Really?”
“Really.”
The dog didn’t fully understand what was happening, but he sensed something wonderful was about to change. When Daniel gently clipped a leash onto his collar, he didn’t resist at all.
Instead, he stood proudly beside them.
For the first time since being abandoned, he walked away from the market entrance.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
When they arrived home, the dog explored every corner of the house with curiosity. His tail wagged constantly as he discovered soft carpets, cozy couches, and a big backyard filled with grass.
Sarah filled a bowl with food and placed it on the floor.
The dog hesitated for a moment, almost as if asking permission.
“Go ahead,” Sarah said with a smile.
He began eating eagerly.

That evening, the tired little dog curled up on a soft blanket in the living room. Daniel gently patted his head.
“You know,” he said, “we should give him a proper name.”
Sarah thought for a moment.
“How about Lucky?”
Daniel smiled.
“I like it.”
Lucky lifted his head when he heard his new name, as if he already knew it belonged to him.
His tail wagged happily.
After days of waiting in a crowded market, hoping someone would choose him again, Lucky had finally found something even better.
A real home.
A warm bed.
And most importantly…
His soul family.
The family he had been waiting for all along. 🐾
